String Quartet: Belcea Quartet
Mendelssohn, Britten, Beethoven
The Belcea Quartet, founded in 1994, is an established name, still led after 31 years by violinist and founder Corina Belcea.
Program
Felix Mendelssohn
- From four pieces for string quartet opus 81 no. 3 and no. 4
Benjamin Britten
- String quartet no. 2 opus 36
Ludwig van Beethoven
- String quartet no. 16 opus 135
Performers
Corina Belcea, violin
Suyeon Kang, violin
Krzysztof Chorzelski, viola
Antoine Lederlin, cello
The quartet regularly performs world premieres, such as Mark-Anthony Turnage’s quartets ‘Twisted Blues with Twisted Ballad’ in 2010 and Krzysztof Penderecki’s String Quartet No. 4 in 2016. However, the significant classical and romantic repertoire remains an integral part of their performance practice.
In 2012 and 2013, Belcea recorded the complete quartets of Beethoven, live in the Benjamin Britten Studio in Snape – named after the composer. These recordings were awarded, including a Gramophone Award (comparable to the Grammy Awards).
It is precisely this Beethoven and Britten that form the heart of the program in this concert, alongside music by Mendelssohn.
