With the 'Quatuor pour la fin du temps', the Brussels ensemble Het Collectief presents one of the most remarkable works of 20th-century chamber music.
Olivier Messiaen wrote this apocalyptic vision in 1941 in the prisoner-of-war camp Stalag IV in Silesia. Impressed by the horrors of World War II and inspired by the 'Apocalypse' from the New Testament, Messiaen expresses his faith in a transcendent way. In addition to an original palette of timbres and harmonies, the composer creates his own rhythmic language that, in combination with sometimes extremely slow tempos, manipulates the perception of time...
