Oratoriumkoor Kennemerland and the Weiland Ensemble present a unique version of J.S. Bach's Weihnachtsoratorium. Actor Nils Verkooijen brings the story to life and takes you through the music.

Johann Sebastian Bach's Christmas Oratorio is one of the most beloved and impressive works in music history. The piece embodies the festive Christmas season: jubilant choirs, brilliant trumpets, timpani rolls and moving arias. For many, it's a Christmas tradition and a masterpiece you want to have heard live at least once in your lifetime.

Yet this monumental work can feel quite long or complicated for many people. That's why Oratoriumkoor Kennemerland and the Weiland Ensemble, two Haarlem choirs under the direction of conductor Annelies Smit, are presenting a special and innovative performance. With great respect for Bach, but in a form that invites listening and experience.

In this accessible version, actor Nils Verkooijen brings the story to life and takes you through the music. From the birth of Jesus to the arrival of shepherds and wise men. This allows the beautiful choir pieces and arias (performed by four young soloists and the choirs) to stand out even more clearly in their place.

Sing along from the balcony

Exclusive balcony seats are specially available for this performance for visitors who want to sing along with the choir pieces. A unique opportunity to become part of Bach's masterpiece yourself and experience the music from within. A preparatory workshop is included for these participants.

Educational project: a world premiere

Prior to the performance, the choirs collaborate with Haarlem secondary school students in a specially developed educational program. Young people get to know Bach this way and discover that his music is vibrant, relevant and accessible today as well. They also sing along with part of the choir pieces during the performance.
