Haarlem is known worldwide as the city of organs. The city has two top organs with a monumental status: the Christian Müller organ in the Great or St. Bavo Church and the Cavaillé-Coll organ in the PHIL.

Erwin Wiersinga studied at the Stedelijk Conservatorium in Groningen with Wim van Beek (organ) and Gerben Makkes van der Deijl (piano). He furthered his studies with, among others, Harald Vogel, Marie Claire Alain, and Guy Bovet. In 2014, he was appointed titular organist of the famous Arp Schnitger organ in the Martinikerk in Groningen, alongside Leo van Doeselaar, and he is also the organist at the Hinsz organ in the Catharinakerk in Roden. From 1997 to 2019, he was an organ teacher at the Universität der Künste in Berlin, and since 2009, he has been a lecturer at the Prins Claus Conservatorium in Groningen. Erwin Wiersinga has performed in many European countries as well as in Korea, China, Japan, and the USA. He has been a guest lecturer at various conservatories in Europe, at the State Conservatory of Beijing, the University of Arts, Rikkyo University in Tokyo, and Theological University and Ewha University in Seoul.

He can be heard on several CDs, including the CD 'Orgelcultuur in Groningen', recorded with some colleagues, which was awarded an Edison. In 2004, he recorded the Requiem and the Messe Cum Jubilo by Maurice Duruflé with the vocal ensemble The Gents. The CD was included in the top 10 of the best CDs in 2005 by the French 'Classic Today' and received the 'Classic Internet Award' in the USA. Together with colleague Leonore Lub, he recorded the complete organ works of Jehan Alain. Erwin Wiersinga regularly collaborates with orchestras and has played under conductors such as Mariss Jansons, Ricardo Chailly, Ivan Fischer, Philippe Herreweghe, Sir Colin Davis, and Leonard Slatkin. In 2016, he played the American premiere of the piece Theatrum Bestiarium by Detlef Glanert with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Carnegie Hall, New York.

From May to October, concerts are held on Tuesday evenings, and in July and August also on Thursday afternoons, in the Grote or St. Bavo Church by renowned organists from home and abroad.
