Haarlem is known worldwide as the city of organs. The city has two top organs with a monumental status: the Christian Müller organ in the Great or St. Bavo Church and the Cavaillé-Coll organ in the PHIL.

Jochem Schuurman took organ lessons from Johan G. Koers from 1997 to 2007. He then studied with Theo Jellema and Erwin Wiersinga at the Prins Claus Conservatory in Groningen, where he graduated cum laude as a Master of Music in June 2013. Additionally, Jochem Schuurman spent a few months in Berlin to take lessons at the Universität der Künste with Leo van Doeselaar and Paolo Crivellaro. He attended masterclasses with Wolfgang Zerer, Eric Lebrun, Edoardo Bellotti, and Pieter Dirksen. Since 2016, Jochem Schuurman has been coached by his former teacher Johan G. Koers.

In December 2013, Jochem Schuurman was awarded the Zilveren Viooltje. In the jury report, he was praised for his versatility, persuasive attitude, and entrepreneurial spirit. In August 2015, he won third prize at the international organ competition in Wuppertal. In May 2017, he won second prize and the audience award at the international César Franck competition in Haarlem. In September 2018, he won second prize at the international Buxtehude organ competition in Lübeck and Hamburg. In 2016 and 2019, he was a finalist in the prestigious Paul Hofhaimer organ competition around the historical organs of the city of Innsbruck. Jochem Schuurman is the titular organist of the Martinikerk in Franeker and the regular player of the monumental Van Dam organ from 1842. He gives concerts as a soloist and as an accompanist and is regularly involved in the premieres of new compositions. Furthermore, Jochem Schuurman is active as an organ and piano teacher and works as an artistic advisor for the Stichting Organum Frisicum.

From May to October, concerts are held on Tuesday evenings and in July and August also on Thursday afternoons in the Grote or St. Bavo Church by renowned organists from the Netherlands and abroad.
