Bert Mooiman

geen pauze

Haarlem is known worldwide as the city of organs. The city has two top organs with a monumental status: the Christian Müller organ in the Great or St. Bavo Church and the Cavaillé-Coll organ in the PHIL.

The pianist, organist, church musician, and music theorist Bert Mooiman studied at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, piano with Theo Bruins, organ with Wim van Beek, and improvisation with Bert Matter. He received the Fock medal for his exceptional artistic achievements. He completed his main subject study in Music Theory in 2003 with the article 'Olivier Messiaen and French Harmony', which was awarded the Martin J. Lürsen Prize.

From 1993 to 2000, he worked as a piano soloist for the National Ballet. Since 2000, he has been connected to the Royal Conservatory as a teacher of music theory, piano, and improvisation, as well as a research supervisor. In 2021, he obtained his PhD at Leiden University with the dissertation 'An Improvisatory Approach to Nineteenth-Century Music', becoming the first Dutch pianist to hold a doctorate in music. He publishes on music theoretical topics and gives lectures for HOVO at Leiden University. With his background as a classical keyboardist, Bert Mooiman is a passionate advocate for historical keyboard instruments. His instrument collection includes a clavichord, a table piano (1830), two historical grand pianos (1878 and 1900), a pedal harmonium, and various French squeeze harmoniums. From 1989 to 2024, he was the resident organist of the Nieuwe Badkapel (The Hague), where he was closely involved in the restoration of the Van Dam organ from 1926. Until 2011, he was also the titular organist of the Grote or Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk in Breda. As an organist, Bert Mooiman regularly guest performs with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra.

From May to October, concerts are held on Tuesday evenings and, in July and August, also on Thursday afternoons in the Grote or St. Bavo Church by renowned organists from home and abroad.
