Haarlem is known worldwide as the city of organs. The city has two top organs with a monumental status: the Christian Müller organ in the Great or St. Bavo Church and the Cavaillé-Coll organ in the PHIL.

The English organist David Briggs is one of the most famous organists of our time. At the age of seventeen, he obtained his first diploma as 'Fellow of the Royal College of Organists'. He studied from 1981 to 1984 at King's College, University of Cambridge. He also studied in Paris with Jean Langlais. Shortly after his studies, he became the first Englishman to win the Tournemire Prize at the International Improvisation Competition of St. Albans. He was associated as an organist with the cathedrals of Hereford, Truro, and Gloucester. David Briggs performs all over the world. As a soloist with orchestras, he has performed at the Royal Albert Hall London, Berlin Philharmonie, and the Moscow International Performing Arts Center. He is a sought-after jury member at international organ competitions.

As a composer, he is also active and has recorded many CDs and DVDs. He is known for his improvisations for 'silent' films such as Phantom of the Opera, Hunchback of Notre-Dame, Nosferatu, Jeanne d'Arc, Metropolis, King of Kings, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Charlie Chaplin films. David Briggs teaches at the University of Cambridge and is Artist in Residence at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York. He gives masterclasses and lectures worldwide as a guest instructor.

From May to October, concerts are held on Tuesday evenings and also on Thursday afternoons in July and August at the Great or St. Bavo Church by renowned organists from home and abroad.
