Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto nr. 2
The Dutch Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Gordan Nikolić presents a programme with works by Mozart, Saint-Saëns and Beethoven.
Mozart's Symphony
Symphony No. 34 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is festive and brilliant. It is a true 'trumpet symphony': radiant brass instruments, an energetic opening and an open, optimistic atmosphere.
Saint-Saëns' Cello Concerto
Camille Saint-Saëns' Second Cello Concerto is spectacular and technically demanding. It consists of two large sections and asks the utmost from the soloist. Less well-known than his First Cello Concerto, but equally impressive. British cellist Steven Isserlis, who performs worldwide and is renowned for his clear tone and expressive playing, combines technical mastery with a direct, narrative style, ideal for this virtuosic work.
Beethoven's Symphony No. 8
Ludwig van Beethoven's Eighth Symphony is short, powerful and surprisingly humorous. Beethoven himself called it "my little symphony in F". The music sounds light and playful, yet is full of energy and sharp accents. Notably, the final movement is the most exuberant and powerful, which was unusual for its time.
