With his powerful, expressive voice, the versatile American countertenor John Holiday effortlessly moves between different genres opera, jazz, and gospel—captivating audiences worldwide. Following his great success at the Prinsengrachtconcert, Amsterdam Sinfonietta welcomes this guest once again for a varied Christmas program featuring classical arias, jazz songs, and Christmas carols.
The After Party, a new song cycle by Carlos Simon, was written especially for John Holiday at the commission of Amsterdam Sinfonietta. Inspired by the African American movement the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s, the work is brimming with energy and infused with the spiritual soundworld of the Black community. The concert concludes atmospherically with a selection of Christmas carols.
