Nederlands Saxofoon Octet
Maria de Buenos Aires
Astor Piazzolla's tango-opera 'Maria de Buenos Aires' is finally back in the Netherlands. Since Máxima's famous tear during 'Adiós Nonino' conquered the hearts of Dutch audiences in one fell swoop, his music has been beloved here. Now, 25 years later, this iconic work returns. More timely than ever and in a brand new guise!
The Dutch Saxophone Octet was the first Dutch ensemble to receive permission from Piazzolla's heirs to arrange the piece for eight saxophones, vocals, text, bandoneon, piano and percussion. A special performance in which music, dance and theater come together seamlessly.
Alongside the eight saxophonists, who also tango dance, mezzo-soprano Karin Strobos shines as the combative Maria de Buenos Aires. Baritone Berend Eijkhout plays her watchful male counterpart and Freek den Hartog takes on the role of the idealistic Duende.
A spirited tango opera naturally cannot do without bandoneon and dance. That is why the Argentine musicians Santiago Cimadevilla (bandoneon), Juan Pablo Dobal (piano) and Marcos Baggioni (percussion) are also to be heard. The tango duo Ezequiel Paludi & Geraldine Rojas brings the soul of Buenos Aires to life with their passionate and graceful dance.
