Haarlem is known worldwide as the city of organs. The city has two top organs with a monumental status: the Christian Müller organ in the Great or St. Bavo Church and the Cavaillé-Coll organ in the PHIL.

Stephan van de Wijgert studied organ at the conservatory in Utrecht. In 1998, he earned his bachelor- and in 2001, his master degree. From 1987 onwards he received lessons from Véronique van den Engh, Jan Raas, Reitze Smits, Matteo Imbruno, Jan Welmers and Erik Visser. He also attended masterclasses and was the prize winner of the Sweelinck competition in 2007. Since 2008 he has been organist at ‘De Duif’ Church in Amsterdam, where he plays the monumental Smits-organ (1863) and organizes concerts for ‘Stadsherstel Amsterdam’, the company that owns ‘De Duif’. Stephan manages several historic organs in Amsterdam and North Holland for ‘Stadsherstel Amsterdam’.

As a church musician, Stephan has been working in the ‘Cosmas and Damianus’ Church in the town of Abcoude since 2000. He is also artistic director of the series of Sunday afternoon concerts in Mijdrecht/Wilnis, which are held on the Maarschalkerweerd- Organ in the ‘Johannes de Doper’ Church. He has the same function at the Berne Abbey Concerts, the organ series of the ‘Abdij van Berne’ in the town of Heeswijk-Dinther in North Brabant.

From May to October, concerts are held on Tuesday evenings and in July and August also on Thursday afternoons at the Grote or St. Bavo Church by renowned organists from home and abroad.
