Haarlem is known worldwide as the city of organs. The city has two top organs with a monumental status: the Christian Müller organ in the Great or St. Bavo Church and the Cavaillé-Coll organ in the PHIL.

Stef Tuinstra studied organ, piano, harpsichord and trombone at the Prince Claus Conservatory in Groningen. He obtained the Master's degree for organ Summa Cum Laude, the 1st degree diploma in church music and choir conducting end the Prix d'Excellence for organ.

From 1974 to 1992 Stef Tuinstra was organist of the Jacobuskerk in Zeerijp, from 1992 to 2023 part-time of the Nieuwe Kerk in Groningen. He is also part-time organist of the Martinikerk in Groningen. He is the leader of the Noord-Nederlandse Orgel-Academie (NNOA). Stef Tuinstra gives concerts and is a masterclass teacher in various European countries, Japan and the USA. He is known as an inventive improviser in various styles. Two cd productions received a shared Edison Prize and a cd album with the complete organ works of Georg Böhm is judged worldwide as a new interpretation standard for baroque North German organ literature.

As a certified organ building consultant, Stef Tuinstra works closely with various Protestant churches and foundations in the Netherlands and with the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands. He has now completed over 160 projects, including a significant part of the Groningen organ collection, known worldwide as a unique organ landscape of the highest level. He is also the author of various (international) publications on organ building and playing, including Bach's Passacaglia (click here for more information).

From May to October, concerts are held on Tuesday evenings and in July and August also on Thursday afternoons in the Grote or St. Bavo Church by renowned organists from the Netherlands and abroad.
