Magnificat, Christmas with the Bach Family
The Dutch Bach Society takes you in the time before Christmas from darkness into light. Bach's radiant Magnificat sounds alongside the Magnificat by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. Two magnificent Christmas works by father and son.
This programme, led by artistic director Johanna Soller, unfolds from the smallest musical core: the monophonic Gregorian Ave maris stella.
The dark atmosphere of this song transitions into the Sinfonia in D minor by Wilhelm Friedemann, the eldest son of Bach. A talented composer who nevertheless never achieved great popularity. How different was the fate of Carl Philipp Emanuel, the most successful of all Bach's children, who in the second half of the eighteenth century was known as 'the great Bach'.
His Magnificat, his first large-scale vocal work, breathes the spirit of his father's Magnificat and Hohe Messe. At the same time, it looks ahead to the music of Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn.
