Paul Casey's musical story is inextricably linked to that of Chris Rea. As a young boy, Paul discovered Rea's music in his father's record collection, a discovery that changed his life forever.
In 1993, Paul meets his great role model backstage in Belfast. Chris encourages him with the words "Go for it." Five years later, Chris receives a demo from Paul through drummer Martin Ditcham. A few days later comes an invitation. Chris immediately recognizes a younger version of himself and decides to write and produce a complete album for Paul.
From that moment on, their paths cross increasingly often. Paul accompanies Chris on international promotional tours, provides the opening act for his concerts for years, and becomes an established member of the live band as rhythm guitarist. At the same time, he becomes Chris' confidant in the studio and chief engineer for major projects such as The Santo Spirito Blues.
Even when Chris stops touring due to health problems, their creative collaboration continues. In 2024, Chris writes the moving song "Peace Bridge," dedicated to Paul and his hometown Derry.
Paul knew better than anyone that Chris Rea's music truly comes alive on stage. With his blessing, he puts together an All Star band at the end of 2024 to bring an exclusive evening with Chris Rea's repertoire to the Derry Jazz Festival. The response is overwhelming. A British promoter picks up the concept and brings the show to Sunderland, where the concert also draws a sold-out crowd and standing ovations.
Until a few weeks before his death, Paul and Chris continue to make plans with the idea of creating new material together based on old demos. The unexpected farewell deeply affects Paul. His hero, mentor, and friend is gone.
