Symphony Orchestra Haerlem presents a musical tribute to two rivers and a song about the sea, sung by soprano Tineke Roseboom.

Program

Smetana – The Moldau
Chausson –  Poème de l’Amour et de la Mer
Schumann – Symphony No. 3 (‘Rhenish’)
Soloist – Tineke Roseboom (soprano)

Conductor: Michiel van Vliet

The Moldau illustrates the journey of the river Moldau, from its source in the Bohemian forests to its confluence with the Elbe. The piece begins with two whispering flute melodies representing the source streams.

Gradually, the music swells as the river grows and flows through the landscape. Poème de l’Amour et de la Mer revolves around love, desire, loss, and the overwhelming power of nature, especially the sea, which symbolizes both beauty and threat. It is sung by Tineke Roseboom, often described as a soprano with a thousand colors.

While composing his third symphony, Schumann wrote to his publisher that he wanted to musically depict the river Rhine. Therefore, this symphony is known as the ‘Rheinische’.
