Rembrandt Frerichs

For pianist and composer Rembrandt, the organ is an instrument deeply rooted in his own family history. A personal and resonant heirloom that has been present in his family from generation to generation. Both his father Ferdinand (1950) and his grandfather were organists. Grandfather Gerard Frerichs (1911) was a prominent figure in Dutch musical life and is considered an early pioneer in the field of Early Music. In a sense, Rembrandt returns to his musical roots with this programme, but from the creativity that characterizes his own career. 

In recent years, he has been heard more frequently as a soloist on church organs. Through invitations to perform organ concerts, it turned out to his own surprise that the instrument holds a special place in his heart, for those who look closely will see a clear parallel between jazz musicians and organists: both stand in a living tradition in which improvisation is a core skill.

Rembrandt explores together with percussion wizard  Vinsent Planjer and one of France's most prominent saxophonists new approaches to make the organ speak in a different context. They explore improvisation alongside composed repertoire from Early Music and Jazz and place the monumental instrument in a surprisingly contemporary context.
