Get into the Christmas spirit with this festive masterpiece by Bach. A biennial tradition of the Haarlem Gemengd Koor (Haarlem Mixed Choir) in the PHIL for over 100 years.
In the Christmas Oratorio, the birth of Christ is jubilantly sung with trumpet fanfares and kettledrum beats from Christmas Day to Epiphany.
The oratorio actually consists of six separate cantatas, written by Bach for six church services.
Due to their length, the cantatas are rarely performed consecutively. This year, the choir will sing cantatas 1 to 4 and the opening chorus of part 5. After part 2 (Boxing Day), there will be a break. Under the direction of our conductor Ago Verdonschot and a choir of over 90 singers (including 20 project singers), it will again be a vibrant and festive whole.

Over het Haarlems Gemengd Koor
Het is februari 1921, de 20 jarige Jan Booda richt het Gemengd Haarlems Koor (HGK) op, bestaande uit 24 leden. Gemengd betekende niet alleen mannen en vrouwen maar ook alle geloven, wat in die tijd wel bijzonder was. Bij het eerste jubileum vijf jaar later wordt een Beethoven-concert gegeven in de Gemeentelijke Concertzaal, tegenwoordig de PHIL. geheten. Vanaf 1925 geeft het HGK daar bijna jaarlijks een concert. Zo is ook de traditie ontstaan van de tweejaarlijkse uitvoering van het Weihnachtsoratorium van Bach, bij het 15-jarig jubileum zelfs brutaal gecombineerd met de humoristische opera Schipbreuk van Johan Wagenaar.
