Bach Hohe Messe
Dutch Bach Association
Sublime, outstanding, all-encompassing. Only superlatives suffice to describe Bach's Mass in B minor, the ‘High Mass’. At the end of his life, Bach brought together his most beautiful and best pieces into one mass. This was how Bach wanted to be remembered; the High Mass is his musical testament.
Program
Johann Sebastian Bach - Mass in B minor, ‘Great Mass’, BWV 232
From the awe-inspiring Kyrie to the jubilant Dona nobis pacem, with in between nine utterly unique arias and duets, fourteen imposing choral movements and a wide range of instrumental solos. British conductor Richard Egarr leads the ensemble on this Christmas tour.
Egarr: “Some musical compositions possess a grandeur that no performance can ever truly match: Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, for example, and of course Bach’s Hohe Messe. These otherworldly masterpieces were consciously created out of the hope for immortality, and they challenge us to reach a comparable level of artistic excellence. To embark on that journey with Bach in this sublime creation is always a humbling privilege.”
