PHIL Café

Beautiful view of the historical center

Directly upon entering, you will find the PHIL Café, a space where classical and modern elements come together harmoniously. The monumental doors can be opened, allowing the space to connect with the Grand Foyer. With a large bar, this area is highly suitable as a reception space. It is also well-suited for a sub-session in an informal theatre arrangement. The small stage can be used for both a speaker and live music.

Rich history

The predecessor of the current PHIL is the gentlemen's society 'Vereeniging'. Before these Haarlem entrepreneurs opened the doors of the concert hall (the current Grote Zaal) in 1873, they used this space as a meeting place, complete with a billiards and game room. Truth or myth is that the Blue Room, which was the name of the PHIL Café until recently, got its name because it was the last space in the building where smoking was still allowed, and therefore it was always 'blue'.

Transformation of the Blue Hall into PHIL Café

Preserving the historical elements, this beautiful hall has been transformed into the PHIL Café in the summer of 2023, a space that invites socializing and listening to music, either before or after a performance or event. The small stage is ideal for a speaker during a breakout session, but also for a DJ or small music group during a gathering or party.

Informal setting for sub-session

The PHIL Café is a very cozy reception area, but it is also used for sub-sessions up to 60 people or, due to the small stage, for live entertainment during a gathering or party. We would be happy to tell you more!
