‘When Sunshine becomes Moonlight’ is a defining, kinetic light work with great visual power. It is a sculpture designed as a hanging mobile and consists of ten separate, moving, mirrored elements. These swirls are illuminated with special light beams, creating a dynamic play of light and shadow. The movement and light come together in a composition, where each element acquires its own character, culminating in an endlessly varying interplay.

The sculpture hangs in the atrium of the PHIL, where the reflective swirls of the mobile engage with the foyer and light. During the day, it captures the constantly changing daylight through the glass ceiling, and in the evening, the sculpture projects reflections of light beams into the space: ‘When Sunshine becomes Moonlight’.

Conductor, orchestra, and audience

The artwork is a metaphor for the conductor leading the orchestra. The conductor directs all parts and ensures a fluid and authentic interplay of all the individual notes of the composition. In the sculpture, all loose swirls are controlled by the central motor and brought together into one whole. An ensemble that is constantly in motion, retains the individuality of its components, and yet is always in harmony and interplay.

Nicky Assmann

Nicky Assmann is now an established name in the Dutch art landscape. Assmann draws inspiration from natural and optical phenomena and creates 'visual music compositions' aimed at an 'immersive and sensory experience'.

'When Sunshine becomes Moonlight' is her second permanent work.

The artwork was developed on commission by the Stadsschouwburg & PHIL Haarlem Foundation and realized with support from the Mondriaan Fund and private donors. The Advisory Committee, consisting of Ann Demeester, Joeri van Ommeren, Zippora Elders, Michèle Baudet and Frits van Dongen, supported the management in the selection process.

Under the Appletree I & II

Specially for the PHIL, Hedy Tjin designed the artworks 'Under the Appletree I' and 'Under the Appletree II'.

Powerful use of color with social consciousness

Hedy Tjin is an illustrator and visual artist. Her work comes to life in diverse forms, from murals and textiles to illustrations for newspapers and award-winning children's books. What unites her work is the powerful use of color with which she visualizes social themes. With her vibrant images, Tjin invites inclusivity and openness. She challenges the viewer to explore complex subjects in a fresh, accessible way.

Hedy Tjin

With her characteristic colorful and expressive style, Hedy Tjin has designed two acoustic wall panels specifically for the PHIL. The artworks, titled 'Under the Appletree I' and 'Under the Appletree II', breathe the history of the place. Where the Foyer now welcomes visitors, there once stood an apple orchard. The further inspiration for the two artworks is drawn from PHIL as a music venue in Haarlem. A central meeting place where music, culture, and community come together.

Execution and realization by Hedy Tjin.
