Geerten van de Wetering
Haarlem is known worldwide as the city of organs. The city has two top organs with a monumental status: the Christian Müller organ in the Great or St. Bavo Church and the Cavaillé-Coll organ in the PHIL.
Geerten van de Wetering is the organist of the Kloosterkerk and the Nieuwe Kerk in The Hague, city coordinator of Classical Music in Zwolle and artistic director of Podium21. With the Podium21 established in 2021, he initiates pioneering programs around the organ in combination with other art disciplines, such as film, video art, theater, or dance. He is also responsible for the intermission concert programming of the Stichting Kunstcentrum Kloosterkerk in The Hague.
In 2018, Geerten won the International Improvisation Competition in Haarlem, earlier he was a finalist at improvisation competitions in Schlägl and Westfalen. Geerten has contributed to many premieres of new works by composers such as Kate Moore, Guus Janssen, Klaas de Vries, Oene van Geel, and Celia Swart. He is connected as an organist to the Herz Ensemble and the Residentie Bach Ensembles, with which he performs the monthly Bach cantata services in the Kloosterkerk in The Hague.
Geerten performs both nationally and internationally and regularly participates in radio and CD recordings. He also composes, some of his works have been published. Geerten studied organ and improvisation with Jos van der Kooy and church music and choir direction at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. He completed a postgraduate course at the Universität der Musik in Vienna with Roman Summereder and Peter Planyavsky. Additionally, he received lessons from Ansgar Wallenhorst (improvisation) and Wiecher Mandemaker (choir direction).
From May to October, concerts are held on Tuesday evenings and also on Thursday afternoons in July and August in the Great or St. Bavo Church by renowned organists from home and abroad.
