Education
We strive to give every child in Haarlem the opportunity to perform on our stage and experience performing arts themselves. This way, we can inspire children and help them discover the value of music and theater. We facilitate this through our educational programs for primary, secondary, and special education, as well as an unforgettable theater summer camp in Schalkwijk.
Our mission: all children in Haarlem on our stages!
Cultural development is important for every child. Music and theater help promote skills such as independence, self-expression, and collaboration. That is why we offer all children in Haarlem this beautiful experience. We want them to feel at home in PHIL and discover how fun music is!
We always provide a combination of (learning to) watch a beautiful performance and discovering your own talent by being on stage yourself.
Youth concerts
PHIL has joined Meer Muziek in de Klas and has signed the Music Agreement. Together with schools and other cultural institutions, we are committed to ensuring that all children in Haarlem can develop musically. We do this, among other things, by giving amateur orchestras, music schools, and other city partners the opportunity to perform in our halls. We also have the annual Choir Battle, which fills the Great Hall of PHIL with singing children, and organise the interactive Game Concert.
Education program
Additionally, we welcome about 60 school classes per year to PHIL for an interactive afternoon of making music in the program From class to orchestra. Children, guided by professional music teachers, learn how to play a musical instrument. At the end of the workshop, they all play a song together with melody, harmony, and rhythm.
Besides programs for primary education, we also focus on secondary education and vocational education. The Haarlem Interschool Tournament (HIT), for example, makes use of our rehearsal rooms and performs in our halls.
For students in special education, we offer introductions to visits through LessonUp, including sensory-friendly preparation for children on the autism spectrum.
Music theatre summercamp
For children between the age of 8 and 12 who want to explore dancing, theatre and music, we organise the Music theatre summercamp every year together with Wereldmuziekschool en Musical4Daagse. During 4 weeks of the summer holidays we offer a free summercamp to children, where they create a show on their own. They rehearse songs, scenes and dances under guidance of our music- and theatre teachers.
