Haarlem is known worldwide as the city of organs. The city has two top organs with monumental status: the Christian Muller organ in St. Bavo Church and the Cavaillé-Coll organ in the PHIL.
Jos van der Kooy is a church musician of the Arminius Church in Rotterdam and concert organist of the Council of State in The Hague. As a teacher for the major subjects organ and improvisation, he worked at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and at Leiden University. From 1965 to 2019 he was a church musician in Amsterdam, where he was associated with the Westerkerk for nearly forty years. From 1990 to 2017 he was the town organist of Haarlem. Over the years, he has received many awards and honors. He was the winner of the International Improvisation Competition Haarlem in 1980 and 1981. In 2011, he was appointed Knight in the Order of Oranje-Nassau. For his work in Haarlem, he received the Silver Medal from the Haerlem Association in 2015 and the Silver City Medal from the Municipality of Haarlem in 2017.
Gonny van der Maten studied organ and church music at the Conservatory of Amsterdam with Albert de Klerk and improvisation and choir conducting at the conservatories in Arnhem and Utrecht. She is currently the conductor of the Tiels Madrigal Choir, the Women's Choir Capricciosa in Amersfoort, the Singing and Oratorio Association Raalte, and the Nijmegen Chamber Choir. Furthermore, she is an organ teacher at the Bachschool Soest and a board member of the J.P. Sweelinck Prize Foundation. From 2004 to 2021, she was a board member and chairperson of the Andriessen/De Klerk Foundation in Haarlem. On February 13, 2022, she was appointed Knight in the Order of Oranje Nassau.
