Haarlem is known worldwide as the city of organs. The city has two top organs with a monumental status: the Christian Müller organ in the Great or St. Bavo Church and the Cavaillé-Coll organ in the PHIL.
Jos van der Kooy is a church musician of the Arminiuskerk in Rotterdam and a concert organist of the Council of State in The Hague. As a teacher for the main subjects organ and improvisation, he worked at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and at Leiden University. From 1965 to 2019 he was a church musician in Amsterdam, where he was associated with the Westerkerk for nearly forty years. From 1990 to 2017, he was the city organist of Haarlem. Over the years, he received many awards and distinctions. He was the winner of the International Improvisation Competition Haarlem in 1980 and 1981. In 2011 he was appointed Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau. For his work in Haarlem, he received the Silver Medal from the Haerlem Association in 2015 and the Silver City Medal from the Municipality of Haarlem in 2017.
Gonny van der Maten studied organ and church music at the Conservatory of Amsterdam under Albert de Klerk and studied improvisation and choir conducting at the conservatories in Arnhem and Utrecht. She is currently the conductor of the Tiel Madrigal Choir, Women’s Choir Capricciosa in Amersfoort, Singing and Oratorio Association Raalte, and the Nijmegen Chamber Choir. Furthermore, she is an organ teacher at the Bach School in Soest and a board member of the J.P. Sweelinck Prize Foundation. From 2004 to 2021, she was a board member and chair of the Andriessen/De Klerk Foundation in Haarlem. On February 13, 2022, she was appointed Knight in the Order of Orange Nassau.
From May to October, concerts are held on Tuesday evenings and in July and August also on Thursday afternoons in the Grote or St. Bavo Church by renowned organists from home and abroad.
